About the Icelandic Flight Academy

 

The Icelandic Flight Academy (IFA) was founded in 1989, with a merger of several flight schools. IFA is the largest flight school (FTO certificate) in Iceland and is located at Reykjavik Downtown Airport. We pride ourselves of high quality flight training at highly competitive prices.

We offer a wide selection of flight training courses, all in accordance with European standards (JAA/EASA), ranging from private pilot level up to airline flight- and cabin crew recurrent training.

 

The aircraft fleet consists of:

• 3 Cessna 152 II

• 4 Cessna 172 SP Skyhawks

• 2  PA  44-180 Piper Seminole

• 1  ALSIM FNPT II MCC Flight Navigator Procedure Trainer

 IFA also operates the IFA Flying Club that includes five aircrafts utilized for recreational flying and hour building.

 

Flying in Iceland

The Icelandic Flight Academy has a team of highly experienced ground and flight instructors. The majority of the ground and advanced flight instructors are as well active airline pilots. Iceland offers an exciting and demanding environment for flight training. The skies over Iceland offer the possibility for training at international and domestic airports with both controlled and uncontrolled airspaces. This combined with magnificent scenery of mountains, lakes, glaciers and coastal areas provides a great flying experience.

 

CPL(A) - Commercial Pilot Program

After the completion of the commercial pilot program the student can apply for an JAA frozen ATPL. The training consists of the following parts:

 

• Private Pilot License (PPL)

• Night Rating

• Hour building

• ATPL-theoretical course

• Multi engine class rating (ME)

• Multi Engine Instrument rating (IR ME)

• Commercial Pilot License (CPL)

• Multi Crew Cooperation Course (MCC)

 

Course Layout

The course is completed in a modular approach. The total program will take about 18 months, the student has an option of taking breaks between the individual parts if he/she desires.

The course layout is normally as follows:

• PPL(A) theory and practical flight training (150 hours of theoretical course and minimum 45 hours of flight instructions)

• ATPL(A) theoretical course is 650 hours of instructor led classroom instructions and is received through class room instruction, based in Iceland.  Other means of obtaining ATPL(A) Theoretical Course is available through other partners.

• MEP(A) Multi engine class rating course (6 hours of flight instructions and 7 hours of theoretical course)

• CPL(A) Commercial Pilot Licence coonsists of 25 hours of flight instructions, there of 5 hours ALSIM FNPT II, 10 hours SEP(A) and 10 hours MEP(A) instruction. This can be reduced by 10 hours, if student has received Basic Instrument Instruction Certificate according to JAR FCL 1.

• Instrument rating (IR) consists of 40 hours ALSIM FNTP II instructions and 15 hours of MEP(A) flight instructions.

• Hours building – 120 hours of hours building to reach minimum flight hours requirement for issue of CPL license, through a Icelandic Flight Academy student flying club.

• MCC -Multi Crew Co-operation Course consists of 20 hours of theoretical course (4 days) and 20 hours (5 days) of ALSIM FNPT II MCC -Flight Navigation Procedure Trainer BE-200 Model.


Additional cost to flight training in Iceland is usually:

• JAA class 1 Medical

• CAA examination fees

• ICAA Licensing cost
